Slavic Manuscripts

The collection of Slavonic and Slavic manuscript codices, 860 volumes, the largest in the country, is a real thesaurus of old Romanian culture. Many of the manuscripts are calligraphic and ornamental art works, containing polychrome miniatures and frontispieces of great refinement in precious bindings, elaborated at the request of the great Romanian princes. One of the important representatives of the Romanian art of painting in mediaeval times, Anastasie Crimca, exquisite miniaturist and calligrapher, is the copyist of many manuscripts of the 17th century. Genuine contributions to the rebirth of the cultural and historical past, the Slavonic manuscripts contain many authentic notes of the scholars of the epoch, real pages of history.
The Liturgical Book belongs to the group of liturgical texts with origins dating back the first centuries of the Christian era and resumes the themes of the four evangels. The folk trend of ornaments unfolds under an aristocratic Byzantine miniature, the religious texts being richly illustrated.
