Historical Documents Collection

Studying the history of the Romanian people, a mission established in the program of the Romanian Academic Society ever since its foundation, triggered the need of gathering, besides the collections of manuscripts, books, serials, a collection of historical documents to illustrate the tradition of the lifestyle of the Romanians on this territory. Those more than 600,000 historical documents in the patrimony of the Romanian Academic Library, acquired for more than a century, illustrate various epochs of the Romanians’ history. They consist of public and private acts, written in Slavonic, Latin, Romanian, Greek, starting the 14th until mid-19th century. Of special importance are old documents, on parchment, for instance Stephen the Great’s, dated August 15th, 1492, left by Vlad Calugarul, Prince of Wallachia.
The Brancovan epoch, a flourishing period in the Romanian culture, is represented by documents from Constantin Brâncoveanu's orderly offices, adorned with sumptuous miniatures, vignettes, initials, enamel flowers, gilt filigrees.
