The artistic and documentary heritage is permanently enriched by purchasing more and more works of the respective artist.
From the drawings of Nicolae Grigorescu (1838-1907) we have more than 345 drawings, watercolours and pastels. Being educated in France, at Barbizon, he is the promoter of a new artistic way of thinking, choosing the plein-air, which he treats according his own temperament and artistic vision. Known as the greatest lyrical artist of the Romanian painting, his art reflects the village microcosm, landscapes of a calm beauty, being also a creator of psychological portraits.
The work of Ştefan Luchian (1868-1916) is just one of the 41 pencil drawings, pastels and watercolours, owned by the Engravings Department. Luchian belongs to the same generation of Romanian plein-air painters. He approached with sensitivity the landscape and the field flowers, and sometimes the suppressed pain of ordinary people. His paintings of field flowers brought him the fame.
Theodor Pallady(1871-1956) has over 2.000 drawings in our collections. From the caricature to the intellectualized landscape, this artist, who can successfully join the great names of universal painting such as Marquet, Rouault, Matisse, created thousands of drawings in pencil and watercolour pencil, figures full of power and poetry, intellectualized but lyrical.
The Engravings Department has a special collection of drawings and engravings in pointe sèche by Iosif Iser(1881-1958).
