Collection of letters and autographs

Recently constituted, the collection of letters and autographs contains approx. 400,000 items, organized on funds, in alphabetical and chronological order. The funds of correspondence of the Romanian personalities of culture and science are, naturally, the most numerous. Although controversial, their value as documents is today in the foreground.
The Department of manuscripts and rare books of the Romanian Academy Library holds correspondence of famous Romanian writers, as Nicolae Iorga, C. A. Rosetti, Mihail Kogalniceanu, Ion Ghica, Dimitrie Bolintineanu, Vasile Alecsandri, Mihai Eminescu, I. L. Caragiale, Mihail Sadoveanu, Mircea Eliade or Emil Cioran.
But of particular value is the fund of the great scholar Nicolae Iorga, more than 70,000 letters, received and sent, revealing aspects of his life and activity. Among letters from foreign writers and political personalities we mention: Voltaire, J. J. Rousseau, Chateubriand, Lamartine, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, Fr. Mistral, Romain Rolland, John Galsworthy, Ch. Robert Conte de Nesselrode, Talleyrand, Napoleon III , Alexandru I, Tzar of Russia, Abraham Lincoln.
